Villa Poppaea Archaeological Site

Villa Poppaea is a large Roman seaside villa in the Oplontis archaeological area near modern Torre Annunziata, close to Pompeii. It is renowned for its scale and well preserved interior decoration from the first century AD.

The villa includes richly decorated reception rooms and residential suites with extensive wall paintings and luxury finishes. The complex layout and decoration indicate a high-status residence from the early Roman imperial period.

The villa was buried and preserved by the AD 79 eruption of Mount Vesuvius and was subsequently excavated in modern times as part of the broader archaeological work around Pompeii and Herculaneum.

It sits on the outskirts of modern Torre Annunziata on the Bay of Naples, within the archaeological zone commonly grouped with the sites preserved by the Vesuvius eruption.

Villa Poppaea (the Villa of Poppaea) is at Oplontis near Torre Annunziata, southeast of Naples. By road it’s about 25-35 km southeast of Naples along the A3/SS18 coastal corridor.

• Combine a morning visit here with nearby Pompeii or Herculaneum to avoid the largest crowds and high afternoon temperatures at the archaeological sites.
• Travel via the Circumvesuviana regional train to Torre Annunziata (Oplontis) and walk to the site-this is the most reliable public‑transport route from Naples or Sorrento.
• Give extra time to see the villa's preserved frescoes and interior rooms: these are the highlights and are often overlooked by visitors who stay focused on the larger nearby ruins.
