Viktualienmarkt is an open-air daily market in central Munich, Bavaria, established in the early 19th century (1807). It is one of the city’s main fresh-food markets and a long-standing local institution.
The market contains a large concentration of stalls and small shops offering fresh fruit and vegetables, meats, cheeses, flowers and regional Bavarian specialties, plus several eateries and a beer-garden area. Shoppers and food-lovers come for single-item specialist stalls as well as prepared foods and floral displays.
The site developed from a farmers’ market into a formal market square during the 19th century and has since remained a regulated municipal market area. It has been adapted over time to accommodate permanent stalls and small specialty shops while retaining its open-air character.
Sited in Munich’s Altstadt, it sits a short walk southeast of Marienplatz and is surrounded by city streets and pedestrian zones, making it easily reachable on foot from central Munich.
