Vikramashila
Archaeological Site Ruined Buddhist monastery and ancient university site in Bihar
Vikramashila is an archaeological site in Bihar with remains of a Pala-period Buddhist monastic university; visitors explore ruins, sculptures and a quiet rural setting.
Vikramashila was an important Buddhist monastic university established in the Pala period in what is now Bihar, India, and functioned as a major centre of teaching and scholarship. The site includes the remains of a large vihara complex and associated stupas and was active during the first millennium CE.
Excavations have revealed the monastery’s layout with cells, assembly areas and a central stupa complex; the site served both religious and educational functions for resident monks and visiting students. It was renowned in its time for Vinaya and tantric studies and for attracting scholars from the wider region.
Historical records and inscriptions attribute the foundation to the Pala rulers in the late 8th to 9th centuries CE, and Vikramashila flourished until the end of the 12th century when it was destroyed during invasions that ended many monastic universities of the region.
The archaeological site lies in present-day Bhagalpur district, Bihar, near the modern settlement associated with the ancient monastery and accessible from local towns in the region.
- Importance: One of the two major mahaviharas of medieval eastern India, historically paired with Nalanda as a principal centre for Buddhist learning under the Pala dynasty.
What to See #
- Main vihara ruins: The excavated monastery complex showing foundations, cells and the remains of a large central assembly area that formed the academic and residential core of the site.
- Central stupa and relic structures: A large stupa and ancillary relic structures identified in the archaeological plan; these mark the site's role as a religious and scholarly centre in the Pala period.
