Vijećnica is Sarajevo’s historic city hall and landmark building on the Miljacka River, known for its ornate Moorish- Revival exterior and richly decorated interior. The structure dates from the Austro-Hungarian period of the late 19th century and has served civic and cultural functions.
The building’s principal features are a large central hall with arched windows and decorative motifs, and a distinctive river-facing façade with patterned stonework. It has been used for municipal and cultural purposes and staged exhibitions and events.
Originally constructed under Austro-Hungarian administration in the late 19th century, the building later housed the National and University Library and was severely damaged by fire during the Siege of Sarajevo in 1992, which destroyed many archival collections. A prolonged restoration and reconstruction process was completed and the building was reopened to the public in the 2010s.
Vijećnica sits on the right bank of the Miljacka River in Sarajevo’s old town near the Baščaršija market quarter. The riverside location places it within walking distance of many central city landmarks.
