Vieques, Puerto Rico

Vieques is an island-municipality of Puerto Rico situated off the main island’s east coast, known for beaches, wildlife and a prominent bioluminescent bay. The island combines natural attractions with small towns and conservation areas.

The outstanding natural feature is Mosquito Bay, a bioluminescent lagoon protected as a reserve and visited by guided night tours. Daytime attractions include sandy beaches such as Sun Bay, coastal villages like Esperanza, and wildlife areas within the Vieques National Wildlife Refuge.

Historically parts of Vieques were used by the U.S. Navy for training from the mid-20th century until operations ceased in 2003, after which large tracts entered conservation and redevelopment for tourism and local uses.

Vieques lies a short ferry ride east of Puerto Rico’s main island and its main town, Isabel Segunda, is the local administrative and transport hub.

• Bioluminescent bay: Mosquito Bay is a protected ecological reserve and night visits are organised under strict guidelines to limit disturbance to the bioluminescent organism.
• Naval history: Large areas of the island were used by the U.S. Navy for training and bombing exercises until 2003; much of that land is now managed for conservation and tourism.
