Saint Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands

Saint Thomas is one of the main islands of the United States Virgin Islands, in the Caribbean, and serves as an administrative and commercial center for the territory. It is best known for its port facilities, colonial-era town, and popular beaches.

The busy port area and waterfront of Charlotte Amalie, extensive duty-free shopping, and several well-known beaches including Magens Bay, a large sheltered bay with a long white-sand beach. The island also offers viewpoints over the harbor, hillside residential areas, and marinas that support sailing and day trips to nearby islets.

The island was part of the Danish West Indies and later transferred to U.S. control in 1917; its economy shifted from plantation agriculture to commerce and tourism over the 19th and 20th centuries. Infrastructure developed around the natural harbor and maritime trade.

Saint Thomas lies in the northeastern Caribbean as part of the U.S. Virgin Islands chain, with steep hills rising from sheltered bays and a compact urban center around the main harbor. The island is a short ferry or boat hop from nearby smaller islands and cays.
