Vienna Gasometers
Historical Site Four converted gas tanks repurposed as urban complexes
Four historic brick gasometers in Vienna’s Simmering district converted into housing, shops and performance spaces; visitors note the industrial architecture, mixed‑use interiors and occasional concerts or exhibitions inside the cylinders.
The Vienna Gasometers are four large, cylindrical former gas storage tanks in the Simmering district of Vienna, built at the end of the 19th century. They are a prominent example of industrial architecture repurposed for contemporary urban use.
Each brick cylinder contains a self-contained mixed-use complex that includes residential apartments, offices, shops and event space arranged around internal courtyards. The preserved exterior façades create a distinctive streetscape while the interiors are modernized for daily life and commerce.
The four gas holders were erected at the end of the 1800s to supply gas to Vienna and were later retired as gas technology changed. Around the late 1990s and early 2000s they were extensively redeveloped into the current mixed-use complexes while keeping the historic brick shells.
The group sits in Vienna’s Simmering district, east of the city centre and within the urban fabric rather than an isolated industrial site. They are accessible from central Vienna by urban transport and lie on a block of former gasworks land.
- Number and era: Four former gas storage tanks originally built at the turn of the 20th century have been retained as brick façades and repurposed for modern use.
- Redevelopment: Redeveloped into mixed-use complexes around the turn of the 21st century while the historic brick shells were preserved, offering internal courtyards and retail space.
What to See #
- Gasometer A: Each of the four cylindrical brick façades dates to the original gasworks and now encloses a separate mixed-use complex containing residential units, offices, shops and entertainment spaces.
- Gasometer B: Converted similarly to the other tanks, this unit contains a combination of apartments and commercial space arranged around an inner courtyard.
- Gasometer C: Houses additional residential and commercial floors inside the preserved exterior shell; internal structures are modern while the brick exterior is retained.
- Gasometer D: The fourth former gas holder completed the group and follows the same pattern of internal redevelopment and preserved exterior masonry.
