The Hundertwasserhaus is a colorful, irregular residential building in Vienna designed by artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser and completed in 1985. It is noted for its undulating floors, bright façade and integrated vegetation.

Conceived as a collaborative project between Hundertwasser and the city, it was built as a municipal residential project to combine social housing with artistic and ecological ideas. Since completion it has remained a functioning apartment building with ongoing maintenance to preserve the artist’s vision.

Located in Vienna’s Landstraße district, the building sits within easy walking distance of the city centre and other cultural attractions such as the Belvedere Palace.

• Visitor access: Exterior viewing is permitted and popular for photography; the apartments remain private and are not open to tourists except on special occasions.

Hundertwasserhaus sits in Vienna’s Landstraße district (Kegelgasse). From central Vienna you can reach the area by U-Bahn to Wien Mitte / Landstraße (U3 and S‑/regional trains stop at Wien Mitte), then walk about 10-15 minutes to Kegelgasse; taxis or short tram rides are also common. By car it’s only a short drive from the city centre (roughly 2-3 km east of Stephansplatz), but note limited on‑street parking near the building.

• Visit early on a weekday morning for the best photos and fewer tour groups; the building is residential so you can only view and photograph it from the street (Kegelgasse and the small square opposite) rather than enter.
• Don't plan to go inside the apartment block-instead, combine your visit with a stop at the nearby KunstHausWien museum to see larger Hundertwasser exhibits and better context for the architect's motifs.
• Walk the surrounding streets to spot details most visitors miss: irregular windows, planted roofs and mosaicked downspouts on adjacent façades; these are best appreciated from multiple viewing angles rather than a single snapshot.
