Veveří Castle
Castle Medieval castle overlooking Brno reservoir, historic interiors
Above the Brno reservoir, Veveří Castle dates to the 11th century; visitors tour medieval halls, battlements and seasonal events and hike in the surrounding forests.
Veveří Castle is a medieval fortress located on a rocky promontory above the Brno Reservoir in the South Moravian Region of the Czech Republic. The site dates to the early 13th century, with the first documentary references in the medieval period.
Visitors can walk through the upper and lower castle complexes with surviving halls, defensive walls and a prominent tower that offers panoramic views over the reservoir and surrounding hills. The ruin and partially restored buildings illustrate Gothic and later architectural phases; the site hosts exhibitions and occasional cultural events in adapted interior spaces. Paths lead around the promontory and connect to nearby forested trails along the reservoir shore.
Veveří Castle originated in the early 13th century and developed as a royal and noble stronghold in Moravia, undergoing Gothic, Renaissance and later modifications through successive ownership changes. It saw periods of decline and restoration; conservation work in the 20th and 21st centuries has stabilized ruins and adapted parts for public access.
The castle stands about 12 km northwest of Brno, perched above the Brno Reservoir on the Svratka River, set amid wooded hills and water. Access is by road from Brno and by local trails from nearby villages.
- Viewpoint: The viewpoint from the main tower gives broad views over the Brno Reservoir and surrounding forested hills, popular for photography and short hikes.
What to See #
- Upper castle: Upper castle complex on the rocky promontory with the main residential halls and surviving medieval masonry, accessible to visitors for internal tours and viewpoints.
- Lower castle and courtyards: Lower castle and courtyards that contain later additions and service buildings dating from medieval to early modern periods, linked to the upper stronghold by defensive walls.
- Castle tower viewpoint: The castle tower provides panoramic views over the reservoir and surrounding countryside and is a common viewpoint for visitors.
How to Get to Veveří Castle #
Veveří Castle sits on the northern shore of the Brno Reservoir about 10-15 km northwest of Brno city centre. By car it is roughly a 20-30 minute drive from central Brno along local roads toward the dam and Komín district (follow signs for Brněnská přehrada / Veveří).
Regular public buses run from Brno to stops near the reservoir and the castle (check current IDS JMK regional schedules for exact routes and times). In summer there is also seasonal passenger boat service across parts of the reservoir that can shorten the walk; expect a short walk from the nearest bus or boat landing to the castle entrance.
Tips for Visiting Veveří Castle #
- Take the summer boat shuttle from Brno to land at the lakeside and approach the castle from the water for a scenic arrival that avoids limited parking at the site.
- Arrive in the late afternoon when day-trip groups have left-this gives better light for the ramps, battlements and the reservoir views and fewer crowds in the courtyards.
- Walk the outer fortifications and surrounding trails as well as the interior rooms; many visitors focus on the main keep and miss restored defensive works and the viewpoints over the Brno Reservoir.
