Villa Tugendhat is a modernist residential building in Brno, Czech Republic, designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and completed in 1930 for Fritz and Greta Tugendhat. It is widely regarded as an important example of early 20th century modern architecture.

Commissioned by the Tugendhat family, the villa was built 1928-1930 to Mies van der Rohe’s design as a private residence. The house subsequently changed hands and uses during the 20th century and has been subject to conservation and restoration to preserve its architectural fabric.

The villa sits within the city of Brno in the South Moravian Region of the Czech Republic, in a residential neighbourhood east of the historic centre.

• Construction dates: Built between 1928 and 1930 to a design by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe for the Tugendhat family, it is a key early example of modernist residential architecture in Central Europe.
• Visiting constraint: Public access is by timed guided tours only, due to conservation requirements and the house’s delicate original fittings and finishes.

Villa Tugendhat is a 20-25 minute walk southwest from Brno’s main train station (Brno hlavní nádraží) or a short tram ride (lines 1, 2 or 4 to the closest stops; check local timetables). There is limited on-site parking; better to arrive by public transport or taxi. Timed guided tours are required for entering the house and begin from the villa grounds.

• Book the timed guided tour in advance - access to the interior is strictly controlled and tours sell out, especially in summer.
• Wear soft-soled shoes inside: the villa's original parquet and metal details are sensitive to scuffs.
• On a tight schedule, prioritize the basement: the original kitchen, servants' spaces and mechanical systems are elegant, functional and surprisingly theatrical.
