How to Get to Vergina
Vergina (Aigai) is reached most easily via Thessaloniki airport and a short onward train or KTEL bus to Veria; the archaeological site is a brief local transfer from Veria. Public transport is frequent enough for day trips from Thessaloniki.
Thessaloniki Makedonia Airport (SKG): The main airport for Vergina and Veria, about 50-60 km away. Domestic and international flights arrive here; from SKG you can reach Veria by KTEL bus or taxi in roughly 45-75 minutes depending on traffic. Shuttle buses and taxis are available at the airport (taxis ≈€60-80 to Veria; bus cheaper).
Athens Eleftherios Venizelos (ATH): If arriving from outside Europe, you may fly to Athens and then take a train or KTEL coach to Thessaloniki (fast trains ~4-5 hours) and continue onward to Veria/Vergina.
Train: Veria (station: Veria/Βέροια) is on the main Thessaloniki-Athens rail corridor with regional and intercity services. From Thessaloniki to Veria the regional/intercity train takes about 1-1.5 hours; ticket prices are modest (regional fares usually €3-10 depending on service).
Bus: KTEL Imathias runs regular coaches from Thessaloniki to Veria; travel time is roughly 1-1.5 hours and single tickets are typically €4-8. From Veria a short local bus or taxi will take you up to the Vergina archaeological site (Royal Tombs) in under 15 minutes.
