Axios-Loudias-Aliakmonas Delta National Park protects the coastal delta formed by the Axios (Vardar), Loudias and Aliakmonas rivers in Central Macedonia and is an important wetland area for birds and other wildlife.

The delta features reedbeds, marshes, and shallow lagoons that support large numbers of waterbirds and migratory species; it is visited for birdwatching, guided walks and for wetland habitat interpretation. Observation hides and marked trails enable wildlife viewing with minimal disturbance.

The area has long been a natural delta shaped by river deposits; modern conservation measures established the national park to protect habitats and biodiversity in the face of agricultural and coastal development. The site is also monitored for its role in regional ecology and migration routes.

Located in Central Macedonia near the Thermaic Gulf, the delta lies west of Thessaloniki and forms a low-lying coastal landscape where the three rivers enter the Aegean Sea.

• Birdwatching importance: The park is a key stopover and breeding area for many migratory waterbird species and is valued for birdwatching during spring and autumn migrations.
• Best time to visit: Best visiting seasons are the migration periods in spring and autumn when waterbird concentrations and diversity are highest.

What to See#

• Delta wetlands: Extensive reedbeds, marshes and shallow coastal lagoons that form the deltaic habitat where the three rivers meet the sea.
• Observation areas and trails: Designated birdwatching areas and trails with hides that allow observation of migrating and resident waterbirds without disturbing habitats.

• Go at dawn or early morning for the best birdwatching - wetlands are most active then and light levels suit observation and photography.
• Plan visits in winter for large migratory flocks and in spring for breeding and nesting activity; separate visits in different seasons reveal very different bird communities.
• Use the quieter peripheral areas of the delta rather than main waterfronts to reduce disturbance to birds and to find observation spots where fewer visitors go.
