Aegae (Macedonia) Archaeological Site

Aegae (modern Vergina) was the ancient capital of Macedon and is an archaeological site in Central Macedonia, Greece. It is best known for its late Classical and early Hellenistic royal tombs and associated palace remains.

The site served as a capital and royal burial place for the Macedonian dynasty in the 4th century BC. Major archaeological work in the 1970s uncovered several intact or partially intact tombs attributed to the Macedonian elite, providing new evidence about royal funerary rites and material culture.

Aegae sits near the modern village of Vergina in Central Macedonia, roughly west of Thessaloniki, within the fertile plains at the foothills of the Vermion Mountains.

Aegae (ancient Aigai) is at the archaeological site near the modern village of Vergina in Imathia, Central Macedonia. The site is reached by road from the regional centres: it is commonly visited by car from Thessaloniki or from the nearby towns of Veria and Naousa; expect a roughly 1-1.5 hour drive from Thessaloniki depending on route and traffic.

There are local buses from Veria and tour services that stop at the archaeological park; on arrival the excavated site and museum are a short walk from the site parking/entrance.

• Start at the on‑site museum/gallery first - it houses the finds and explanatory displays that put the royal tombs and ruins into context, making the outdoor site easier to appreciate.
• Visit in the morning to avoid summer heat and coach-party crowds common later in the day; early visits also make photography and reading site panels easier without many people.
• Allow time to walk the main archaeological area and see the visible tumuli and palace remnants after the museum visit; check opening hours in advance as rural sites sometimes have seasonal schedules.
