Velia (ancient Elea) is an archaeological site on the Cilento coast of Campania, southern Italy, representing a Greek colony later Romanised as Velia. The city was founded in the Archaic period by settlers from Phocaea and flourished in the classical era.
Ruins at the site include stretches of defensive walls, foundations of houses and public buildings and necropolis areas, reflecting Greek and Roman urban phases. The city is historically notable as the home of the Eleatic school of philosophy, associated with figures such as Parmenides and Zeno of Elea.
Founded in the 6th century BCE by Ionian colonists from Phocaea, the settlement developed through the classical Greek period and continued under Roman administration before declining in the later Roman and medieval eras.
The ruins lie near the modern town of Ascea on the Cilento coast in the Campania region of southern Italy, facing the Tyrrhenian Sea.
