Vasilyevsky Island

Vasilyevsky Island is a principal island in the Neva River delta that forms part of central Saint Petersburg. It is notable for its classical quayfronts, academic buildings and the prominent Strelka (spit) with the Old Stock Exchange and Rostral Columns.

The island’s eastern tip provides framed views across the Neva toward the Winter Palace and central city; embankments lined with historic buildings house museums, university faculties and administrative institutions. Urban canals, bridges and a grid of streets create a tightly built island environment with both civic and residential areas.

Originally developed in the early 18th century as part of Peter the Great’s plan for the new capital, the island has long hosted trade, administrative and educational institutions. The quayfront architecture reflects 18th and 19th-century urban planning that oriented the island toward the river and the city’s central axis.

Geographically Vasilyevsky Island sits in the Neva delta immediately west of the Peter and Paul Fortress and adjacent to other central islands of Saint Petersburg, connected to the mainland by multiple bridges and within easy walking distance of the historic centre.

• Best viewpoints: The Rostral Columns at the island's eastern tip are a primary viewpoint for sunrise and river vistas toward the historic centre and are often associated with naval ceremonial lighting on key dates.
• Cultural and academic hub: Several major cultural institutions and university buildings occupy the island's embankments, making it a dense civic and academic quarter within St Petersburg's central area.
