Vasilyevsky Island is a principal island in the Neva River delta that forms part of central Saint Petersburg. It is notable for its classical quayfronts, academic buildings and the prominent Strelka (spit) with the Old Stock Exchange and Rostral Columns.

The island’s eastern tip provides framed views across the Neva toward the Winter Palace and central city; embankments lined with historic buildings house museums, university faculties and administrative institutions. Urban canals, bridges and a grid of streets create a tightly built island environment with both civic and residential areas.

Originally developed in the early 18th century as part of Peter the Great’s plan for the new capital, the island has long hosted trade, administrative and educational institutions. The quayfront architecture reflects 18th and 19th-century urban planning that oriented the island toward the river and the city’s central axis.

Geographically Vasilyevsky Island sits in the Neva delta immediately west of the Peter and Paul Fortress and adjacent to other central islands of Saint Petersburg, connected to the mainland by multiple bridges and within easy walking distance of the historic centre.

  • Best viewpoints: The Rostral Columns at the island's eastern tip are a primary viewpoint for sunrise and river vistas toward the historic centre and are often associated with naval ceremonial lighting on key dates.
  • Cultural and academic hub: Several major cultural institutions and university buildings occupy the island's embankments, making it a dense civic and academic quarter within St Petersburg's central area.

What to See #

  • Strelka (the Spit) and Rostral Columns: The Strelka or Spit - the eastern tip of the island with the Old Stock Exchange building and the pair of Rostral Columns that frame views across the Neva River to central St Petersburg.
  • Quayfronts and academic buildings: The Twelve Collegia building and other classical quayfronts that form part of the university and academy district along the island's embankments.
  • Island neighbourhoods and embankments: Residential and industrial districts with a network of streets, canals and smaller islands that together form the island's urban fabric within the Neva delta.

How to Get to Vasilyevsky Island #

Vasilyevsky Island is in central Saint Petersburg and is served by the city’s public transport. The Vasileostrovskaya metro station (on the city metro) and several tram and bus lines stop on the island; from the metro it is typically a 5-15 minute walk to major sights on the island such as the Strelka and the embankments. Bridges from the city center (e.g., Palace Bridge area) also provide straightforward driving access.

Tips for Visiting Vasilyevsky Island #

  • Use the Vasileostrovskaya metro to start exploring rather than arriving by tourist river boats-this puts you within easy walking distance of the Rostral Columns, Old Stock Exchange and local museums before crowds build.
  • Time a visit for the White Nights period (late May-July) or for early evening when the Rostral Columns and embankments are atmospheric and many day-tour groups have dispersed.
  • Go beyond the Spit: visit lesser-known island sites such as Menshikov Palace and the local university streets where small museums and quieter cafés are clustered but often missed by those sticking to the main embankment.
