Stockholm’s Vasa Museum displays the 17th-century Vasa warship salvaged in 1961 with preserved hull, plus maritime artifacts and exhibits on shipbuilding and life aboard.

Main image

The Vasa Museum in Stockholm houses the almost-completely preserved 17th-century warship Vasa and is one of Sweden’s most visited museums. The vessel sank in Stockholm harbour on its maiden voyage in 1628 and was salvaged and conserved in the 20th century.

Exhibits focus on the ship’s construction, the archaeological recovery, conservation processes and the people associated with the vessel. The museum building provides elevated walkways and viewing platforms so the hull can be studied from multiple levels, and associated collections include artefacts recovered from the ship. The display combines maritime archaeology with historical interpretation of 17th-century naval ambitions.

The Vasa was salvaged in 1961 after being submerged for over three centuries, and the museum opened in 1990 to display the conserved vessel. Ongoing conservation and climate control are central to the museum’s work.

The museum is located on the island of Djurgården in central Stockholm, within easy reach of the city centre and other museum attractions.

  • Ship history: The salvaged 17th-century warship on display sank on its maiden voyage in 1628 and was raised in 1961, with the museum built around the preserved hull.
  • Museum layout: The museum is located on Djurgården and the exhibition is organised over several levels, allowing visitors to view the ship from different heights and angles.

How to Get to Vasa Museum #

The Vasa Museum is on Djurgården island in central Stockholm. From Stockholm Central (T‑Centralen) take tram 7 toward Djurgården and get off at the Nordiska museet / Vasamuseet stop - it’s a 2-3 minute walk from the stop to the museum.

You can also reach Djurgården by the short sightseeing ferry from Nybroplan (seasonal) or by bus; driving from central Stockholm is only a few kilometres and there is limited paid parking near the museum.

Tips for Visiting Vasa Museum #

  • Arrive right at opening or late afternoon to avoid cruise‑ship peak times at the docks - mid‑day is busiest.
  • Buy a timed ticket online to shorten entry queues, then start at the upper galleries to get a broad overview before descending to the hull level for detailed close‑ups.
  • Visit the conservation displays and lower‑level exhibition spaces: they explain how the Vasa was salvaged and preserved and are often skimmed by visitors concentrating only on the ship itself.
