Vardzia
Religious Site Medieval cave monastery complex carved into cliffs
Carved into a cliff in Samtskhe-Javakheti, Vardzia is a 12th‑century cave monastery complex with troglodyte cells, frescoed chapels and defensive galleries; tourists visit for medieval architecture, mountain scenery and hiking the surrounding trails.
Vardzia is a large cave monastery and cliffside settlement in southern Georgia, carved into a vertical rock face in the 12th century. The complex is regionally significant for its scale and for a central rock-cut church with surviving fresco work.
Visitors explore the cliff galleries, tunnels and chambers that form the site, with the Church of the Dormition as a principal highlight for its medieval paintings. The cave network includes living quarters, storage rooms and defensive passages arranged over multiple levels.
Construction took place during the high medieval period when rock-cut architecture was used for monastic and defensive purposes in the region. In 1283 a strong earthquake destroyed large parts of the complex, and the remaining structures have been conserved and interpreted since the 20th century.
Vardzia is located in the Aspindza Municipality of Samtskhe-Javakheti in southern Georgia, carved into a cliff above the Kura (Mtkvari) valley and accessed from nearby rural roads.
- Date and scale: The complex dates mainly to the 12th century and contains hundreds of rooms carved into the cliff, centred on a church with medieval frescoes.
- Earthquake damage: A major earthquake in the late 13th century damaged large portions of the complex, leaving the remaining caves visible today.

- Cave complex and tunnel system: A dense network of caves, tunnels, residential chambers and storage rooms carved into the cliff face that once housed monastic communities and inhabitants.
