The beach is characterized by wide, sandy shores, shallow coastal waters and a continuous band of resorts, restaurants and recreational services along the peninsula. Water sports, sunbathing and organized excursions to nearby coral reefs are primary visitor activities.
Varadero developed as a resort area during the 20th century and grew into a mass-tourism destination featuring large hotels, beaches reserved for guests, and supporting infrastructure. The Hicacos Peninsula also contains protected natural patches, including the Varahicacos Ecological Reserve, which conserves native coastal habitats and some archaeological sites.

How to Get to Varadero Beach #
Varadero is about a 2-3 hour drive from Havana (approximately 140 km) along the Vía Blanca and Autopista Sur; shared taxis (colectivos) and tourist buses run frequently from Havana’s main terminals. The nearest airport is Juan Gualberto Gómez Airport (VRA) in Varadero, a short drive from the beach. Local buses and hotel shuttles serve the resort zone.

- Go before 9am or after 5pm to avoid the peak-hotel crowd and get long stretches of almost-private sand.
