Vanis Kvabebi is a medieval Georgian cave monastery complex carved into a cliff in the Samtskhe-Javakheti region. The site comprises a cluster of rock-cut monastic cells, churches and defensive terraces integrated into the natural rock face.
The complex contains at least two principal churches and numerous cellular chambers used by monks, linked by narrow stairs and passageways. Its elevated position gives broad views over the surrounding valley and made it defensible as a monastic refuge.
Founded and developed during the medieval period, the site served as a religious centre and monastic retreat for the Georgian Orthodox Church. Over centuries the complex was maintained, adapted and partially fortified to meet both spiritual and defensive needs.
Vanis Kvabebi sits on a rocky ridge in Samtskhe-Javakheti, a short drive from the regional towns in southern Georgia. The nearest larger urban centre in the region is Akhaltsikhe; the monastery is reached by a steep local path from the road below.

- Visit in the early morning or late afternoon for softer light and far fewer visitors; the low sun also highlights the cliff-cut facades and makes photos of the stone monastery more striking.
- Allow time to climb up through the complex to the fortified upper levels - the highest terraces give the best panoramic views over the surrounding valley and the nearby Vardzia area, which many visitors skip if they stay only on the lower level.
- Combine the visit with a trip to nearby Vardzia or Akhaltsikhe to make the most of the remote Samtskhe-Javakheti transport connections and local history - guided explanations at the site substantially increase understanding of the cave architecture.
