Van Don Island
Island Island in Quang Ninh archipelago, coastal landscapes
Van Don’s archipelago and ferry terminals act as a gateway to Bai Tu Long Bay and Quan Lan; travelers use it for sandy coves, seafood and boat connections to less-developed bays.
Overview - Van Don Island is part of the Van Don archipelago in Quang Ninh province, northeastern Vietnam, and lies in the Gulf of Tonkin. The area has been developed in recent years for transport and tourism infrastructure.
What visitors find - Tourists use the island and nearby archipelago as a jumping-off point for Bai Tu Long Bay cruises, beach visits, and coastal boat trips. Improved air and road links have increased visitor numbers since the late 2010s.
History - The islands in Van Don have traditionally supported fishing communities. Development for tourism and transport infrastructure accelerated in the 2010s, including construction of an international airport to serve the district.
Location - The island sits off Vietnam’s northeast coast in Quang Ninh province, administratively part of Van Don district. The nearest major transport hub on land is the town of Van Don and the airport connects the islands to Hanoi and other cities.
- Access and administration: The district and its islands are administered from Van Don town on the mainland; the international airport improved access after 2018.
What to See #
- Van Don International Airport: A purpose-built airport serving Van Don district that opened for commercial flights in 2018, reducing travel time from Hanoi and other Vietnamese cities to the Van Don archipelago.
- Island group: Part of an extensive coastal archipelago in the Gulf of Tonkin, with a mix of larger inhabited islands and smaller uninhabited islets used for fishing and aquaculture.
How to Get to Van Don Island #
Vân Đồn Island (Vân Đồn) is served by Vân Đồn International Airport (VDO) with flights from Hanoi and other cities, making it the quickest gateway. By road, Vân Đồn is connected to Hạ Long and other parts of Quảng Ninh by National Highway 18 - the drive from Hạ Long is typically around 1-2 hours, and from Hà Nội about 3.5-4 hours depending on traffic.
From the airport or the island’s main towns you can reach beaches, ports and attractions by taxi, rented motorbike or local transport; ferry connections to nearby islands depart from the island’s ports.
Tips for Visiting Van Don Island #
- If you are coming from Hanoi or Hạ Long Bay, use Van Don International Airport for the fastest overland access to Van Don district and to connect to ferries and island trips.
