Valtellina Valley

Valtellina is an alpine valley region in northern Lombardy, Italy, occupying a corridor through the Rhaetian Alps. The valley is known for its combination of terraced vineyards and mountain resorts.

The lower slopes and valley floor contain vineyards and small towns noted for regional wines, while the upper valley opens into high mountain terrain used for skiing, hiking and access to major alpine passes. The landscape includes steep terraced slopes, river corridors and alpine basins.

Historically the valley has been an important transit and agricultural region linking northern Italy with the Alps; over time it has developed both a wine economy on the lower slopes and mountain tourism at higher elevations.

Valtellina runs within the province of Sondrio in Lombardy, with major towns in the valley serving as bases for both wine tourism and alpine recreation in the surrounding mountains.

• Mixed landscape: Combines alpine terrain and agricultural terraces, meaning visitors find both winter sports infrastructure and wine-producing landscapes within the valley.

What to See#

• Vine terraces and wine towns: Steep terraced vineyards and small Alpine villages that produce regionally important wines, especially from local grape varieties cultivated on stone terraces.
• Ski areas and mountain passes: High mountain passes and ski resorts at higher elevations used for winter sports and summer mountain hiking, forming part of the regional Alpine infrastructure.

• Base a visit in Tirano if you plan to use the Bernina Railway - Tirano is the Valtellina gateway and the scenic rail route to St. Moritz departs from there, making it an excellent transport-focused hub.
• Visit in late spring to early autumn for hiking, open mountain passes and vineyard walks; outside the winter ski season the valley is far less crowded and many high routes are fully accessible.
• Avoid driving all the high mountain passes without planning-if you want alpine scenery without mountain driving, take regional trains through the valley or book local guided day trips to side valleys that many visitors skip.
