Vallisaari
Island Island nature reserve near Helsinki with military ruins
Island in Helsinki’s archipelago with former military sites, coastal trails, picnic spots and birdwatching; reachable by short ferry from the city for day trips.
Vallisaari is a forested island in Helsinki’s archipelago in Uusimaa, Finland, located a short ferry ride from the city center. The island combines coastal fortifications and restored wooden buildings with a variety of habitats - rocky shores, meadows and mixed forest. It reopened to the public in 2016 after long military use and is now managed for recreation, nature conservation and cultural heritage. Visitors use marked trails to reach viewpoints, old batteries and sheltered coves with views across the harbour.
- Access: Ferry services run seasonally from central Helsinki (Kauppatori) and are the standard public access route to the island.
- Reopening: The island was closed to the public for decades as a military area and reopened in 2016, making it notable for both nature and historic military remains.
What to See #
- Fortifications: Coastal artillery batteries, stone barracks and other 18th-19th century fortifications that were part of Helsinki's maritime defenses.
- Nature trails and buildings: Marked walking trails and restored wooden structures that traverse mixed forest, meadows and rocky shorelines, opened to the public in 2016.
