The Valley of the Golden Mummies is an archaeological necropolis in Egypt’s Western Desert discovered in the 1990s that produced large numbers of gilded and painted mummies. The site is located in the Bahariya Oasis and is notable for its quantity of decorated Romano-Egyptian burials.
Excavations revealed burial shafts and chambers containing painted cartonnage, gilded masks and decorated coffins; many of the finds showed a fusion of Egyptian and Greco-Roman funerary styles. The assemblage includes a wide range of burial goods and funerary equipment typical of the Roman-period oasis communities.
The necropolis dates primarily to the Greco-Roman period, with burials usually assigned to the 1st to 3rd centuries AD. Archaeological teams conducting fieldwork in the 1990s uncovered the site, publishing finds that drew international attention for the number and preservation of mummies.
Situated in the Bahariya Oasis in Egypt’s Western Desert, the necropolis lies several hundred kilometers southwest of Cairo and is associated with the agricultural and caravan communities of the oasis region.
