Valles Caldera National Preserve
Park Extensive volcanic caldera protecting grazing lands and wildlife
Valles Caldera National Preserve occupies a volcanic caldera in New Mexico with wide grass meadows, forested rims and spring‑fed streams. Visitors hike, fish, watch elk and join guided tours across the preserve’s trails and volcanic landscape.
Valles Caldera National Preserve is a large volcanic caldera and federally designated preserve in the Jemez Mountains of northern New Mexico, created by Congress and established as a protected area in 2000. The site protects a broad grass valley and surrounding forested hills and is managed for conservation, research, grazing, and public recreation.
The preserve encompasses roughly 89,000 acres of meadows, forests, and volcanic features. Popular on-site activities include hiking, fishing on several small streams, wildlife viewing, and ranger-led and concession-guided tours into the caldera. Roadside overlooks and the visitor center offer accessible viewpoints into the central grass valley.
The landscape is the product of Pleistocene volcanic activity that produced the caldera and later resurgent domes and lava flows. The area was set aside as a preservation and research unit by federal legislation in 2000 and later came under long-term National Park Service management to combine conservation with public access.
The preserve lies in the Jemez Mountains of northern New Mexico, about an hour to 90 minutes by car northwest of Albuquerque depending on route and road conditions. The nearest small towns are in the Jemez and Los Alamos area; the preserve sits amid forested high country and volcanic terrain.
- Size and climate: The preserve covers about 89,000 acres and visitors should expect high-elevation conditions year-round, with cool summers and snowy winters.
- Wildlife and access: Wildlife viewing for elk and mule deer is best in early morning and late afternoon; guided tours and permits are required for some backcountry or vehicle access.
