Valles Caldera is a large volcanic caldera in the Jemez Mountains of northern New Mexico that is managed as the Valles Caldera National Preserve. The preserve protects an extensive grassed caldera basin ringed by forested rims and volcanic domes. The site is used for outdoor recreation and ecological research across tens of thousands of acres and includes maintained trailheads and access points. The caldera was created by massive volcanic activity during the Pleistocene and later volcanic resurgence produced domes within the depression.

How to Get to Valles Caldera #
Valles Caldera lies west of Los Alamos and north of Albuquerque in northern New Mexico. The most common access is by car via NM-4 and local forest roads; the nearest towns with services are Jemez Springs and Los Alamos. Some interior roads require high-clearance vehicles and seasonal access restrictions apply-check the preserve’s current access notices before travel.
