Valle dei Templi
Archaeological Site Extensive ancient Greek temple ruins overlooking Agrigento
An archaeological park in Agrigento featuring large Greek temples-Concordia among them-sited on a ridge near the sea; visitors explore Doric ruins, archaeological paths and coastal views of southern Sicily.
The Valle dei Templi (Valley of the Temples) is an extensive archaeological park near Agrigento in Sicily containing a series of well-preserved ancient Greek Doric temples and remains dating mainly to the 5th century BC. The ensemble forms one of the most important concentrations of Classical Greek architecture outside mainland Greece.
Key monuments include large temples such as the Temple of Concordia, the Temple of Juno and the ruined mass of the Temple of Zeus, set along a ridge that overlooks the surrounding valley. The site includes paved pathways, defensive walls and scattered domestic and funerary remains that together illustrate the urban layout of the ancient city of Akragas.
Greek colonists built the major temples during the Classical period; the site was later studied and excavated from the 18th century onward and has been protected as an archaeological park and World Heritage Site.
The park runs along a ridge west of the modern city of Agrigento in southwestern Sicily, with road access from the town and panoramic views across the plain to the coast.
- UNESCO status: Contains multiple 5th and 6th century BC Greek Doric temples within a protected archaeological park and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
- Best times to visit: Best visits occur at early morning or late afternoon when the light highlights the stone architecture and reduces midday crowds.
