Heraclea Minoa Archaeological Site

Heraclea Minoa is the archaeological remains of an ancient Greek city on a coastal promontory of southern Sicily, located at the mouth of the River Platani. The site preserves visible traces of an acropolis, defensive walls, a theatre and necropolis dating to the Archaic and Classical periods.

Excavated areas reveal city planning and public architecture typical of Greek colonial sites in Sicily, including domestic quarters and funerary areas. The theatre and acropolis remain among the most visible features for visitors.

The settlement was founded in the Archaic period, with material evidence of Greek and later Roman occupation, and it played a role in regional coastal networks in antiquity. Over centuries the site changed hands and functions in response to regional political shifts.

Heraclea Minoa occupies a headland on Sicily’s southern coast between the provinces of Agrigento and Agrigento’s coastal plain, accessible from local roads and situated within a largely rural coastal landscape.

• Acropolis: Acropolis and fortified settlement remains situated on a coastal promontory, with surviving foundations and traces of masonry walls from the Archaic and Classical periods.
• Theatre and necropolis: A small Hellenistic/Roman theatre and remains of domestic quarters and necropolis areas that illustrate long-term occupation from the Archaic period onwards.

Heraclea Minoa is on Sicily’s southern coast near Licata and Agrigento. By car, follow coastal routes from Agrigento (about 1 hour) or from Licata. Local buses serve nearby towns; the site is accessible by short taxi or local bus ride from Licata.

• Bring sun protection-the coastal scrub and exposed ruins offer little shade during summer.
• Look for reused architectural blocks: Greek and Roman elements were often recycled into later structures here.
• Combine with a visit to the nearby Scala dei Turchi or Agrigento to get a sense of Sicily's layered ancient coastline.
