Valaam Monastery is an Orthodox monastic complex on the Valaam archipelago in Lake Ladoga, Russia, traditionally associated with medieval Russian monasticism. The island complex includes a main monastery cluster with churches, cells and smaller sketes set among pine forests and rocky shores. Pilgrims and visitors come for liturgical services, iconography and the island setting rather than large museum collections.
The monastery is traditionally dated to the early medieval period, with documentary and architectural evidence showing major phases of construction in later centuries. How to Get to Valaam Monastery
Most visitors reach Valaam by boat. Regular seasonal hydrofoil and ferry services operate from Sortavala (Republic of Karelia) during the summer months; there are also seasonal boats from Priozersk and Petrozavodsk depending on schedules. From Saint Petersburg the trip requires a train or bus to Sortavala (or Petrozavodsk) and then a connecting boat; allow a full day for travel. Private boats can be chartered in summer.
