Vadstena Abbey is a former Bridgettine monastery in the town of Vadstena in Östergötland, Sweden, founded by Saint Bridget (Birgitta) in 1346. It grew into one of medieval Sweden’s principal monastic centres.
The complex includes the 14th-century abbey church and surviving monastic buildings; visitors come to see the medieval architecture, cloistered spaces and museum displays that explain monastic life. The site contains visible medieval masonry and later conservation work that makes the layout and functions of the abbey easy to follow.
The abbey was established in 1346 under the patronage of Saint Bridget and her followers and operated as a religious and cultural centre through the Middle Ages. It was affected by the Protestant Reformation in the 16th century and its religious functions were largely suppressed then; subsequent centuries saw conservation and the development of the site as a historic monument.
