Vättern is a large freshwater lake in south-central Sweden and the country’s second-largest by surface area. The lake is noted for its clear, deep waters and extensive shoreline lined by towns, historic sites and agricultural lands.

Boating, fishing and lakeside tourism are the primary visitor activities; the lake’s clarity and depth make it attractive for swimming, sailing and recreational fishing. Important towns include Jönköping at the southern end and Vadstena on the eastern shore, both offering visitor services and cultural attractions.

Vättern was formed by glacial action and lies between the provinces of Västergötland, Östergötland and Småland, forming a major inland waterway in southern Sweden and a prominent regional landscape feature.

Lake Vättern is reached via the towns on its shores - notably Jönköping (south) and Motala (east). By car take the E4 (and connecting national roads) to Jönköping; from Stockholm the drive is roughly 3-4 hours (about 300 km).

Regional trains and long‑distance buses serve Jönköping and Motala from Stockholm and Gothenburg; from either town the lakefront is typically a 5-20 minute walk from the central station or main bus stops.

• Visit Vättern at first light or late afternoon for calm water, good light for photos and far fewer day-trippers than midday; shoulder seasons (late spring, early autumn) give pleasant weather with fewer tourists than midsummer.
• Avoid the Vätternrundan bike event (early June) if you want to escape crowds and heavy road closures; check local event calendars before planning lakeside drives or cycle rides.
• Instead of the busiest towns (Jönköping, Motala), use smaller harbors such as Gränna as your access point for Visingsö island-the Gränna-Visingsö ferry is a simple way to reach the quieter island and explore its lanes away from the mainland crowds.
