Uxmal
Archaeological Site Large Maya archaeological site noted for Puuc architecture
The Pyramid of the Magician and ornate Puuc facades make Uxmal a go-to near Mérida; visitors study finely cut stone mosaics, the Nunnery Quadrangle, and acoustical plazas that illustrate late Classic Maya urban planning.
Uxmal is a major Maya archaeological site in the Puuc region of Yucatán, noted for its finely worked stone facades and Puuc architectural style. The site dates mainly to the Classic period and is one of the most important sites of northern Yucatán.
Principal highlights include the rounded Pyramid of the Magician (about 35 metres tall), the ornate Nunnery Quadrangle, and the long carved facade of the Governor’s Palace. Stone facades feature elaborate mosaic work and repeated masks of the rain god Chaac; the compact core of monumental buildings sits on a raised platform landscape.
Uxmal was constructed and occupied by the Maya, with major building phases during the Classic period when Puuc-style architecture developed. The site later declined before the arrival of the Spanish, and modern archaeology and conservation have cleared and restored the principal groups.
The ruins lie in the rolling limestone hills of the Puuc region in Yucatán, inland from the northern coast and accessible by road from Mérida and other regional towns.
- Architectural style: Buildings show classic Puuc-style decoration with carved stone masks of the rain god Chaac and finely cut geometric mosaics, best seen in late afternoon light.
- Visitor time: The site is compact enough to explore on foot; many visitors take 1.5 to 3 hours to see the principal monuments.
What to See #
- Pyramid of the Magician: A steep, rounded pyramid known as the Pyramid of the Magician reaches roughly 35 metres and dominates the central plaza; it has an unusual elliptical base and multiple construction phases.
- Nunnery Quadrangle: The Nunnery Quadrangle consists of four palace-type buildings arranged around a central courtyard, richly decorated with Puuc-style stone mosaics and lattices.
- Governor's Palace: The Governor's Palace is a long, low building with an elaborately carved facade that stretches about 100 metres across a single platform face.

On arrival expect a short walk from the parking/arrival area to the main plaza and pyramids; guided shuttles and on-site parking are available.
Tips for Visiting Uxmal #
- Arrive at opening to enjoy Uxmal in cooler light and to avoid the big tour groups that roll in from Mérida mid‑morning; the site is much quieter in the early hours.
- Start at the Pyramid of the Magician and follow the main circuit through the Nunnery Quadrangle and Governor's Palace-taking that order helps the architecture read chronologically and prevents backtracking when the site is busiest.
- Plan to stay into late afternoon or check the schedule for the evening light‑and‑sound presentation: the site takes on a very different atmosphere after daylight and many visitors miss the illuminated façades.
Best Time to Visit Uxmal #
Go to Uxmal in the dry season (November-April), arriving early in the day to avoid heat and the largest tour-group crowds.
