How to Get to Usakos#
Usakos is a small rail-and-road town on Namibia’s B2 corridor between Windhoek and the coast. The closest airports are Walvis Bay (WVB) for coastal access and Hosea Kutako (WDH) near Windhoek for international flights; most visitors arrive by road or coach from those hubs.
Walvis Bay Airport (WVB): Car rental or taxi from Walvis Bay to Usakos is the usual option; the drive follows the B2 and takes roughly 1-1.5 hours depending on traffic. Taxis/shuttles typically cost from N$400-800 one way; car rental prices start around N$500/day depending on season.
Hosea Kutako International Airport (WDH), Windhoek: Windhoek is the main international gateway. The drive from Windhoek to Usakos is about 2.5-3 hours on the B2; intercity coaches also connect Windhoek and towns along the B2 (see train/bus card). A private transfer or taxi will be considerably more expensive than shared coach services (expect several hundred to over a thousand N$ for private transfer).
Train: Usakos sits on Namibia’s main TransNamib rail corridor between Windhoek and the coast (Swakopmund/Walvis Bay). Passenger train services are infrequent and primarily run on special timetables; check TransNamib for schedules and fares.
Bus / Coach: Intercity coach operators run services between Windhoek and coastal towns that pass Usakos; travel time from Windhoek is typically 2.5-3 hours by coach, with fares varying by operator (budget coaches are cheaper, private shuttle services cost more). - TransNamib train ((varies) ) - TransNamib operates freight and occasional passenger trains on the Windhoek-Swakopmund/Walvis Bay line that stops at Usakos. Passenger schedules are limited and can change, so confirm times on TransNamib’s site before planning.
- Car rental / self-drive (N$500+/day) - Driving gives full flexibility to explore nearby attractions and the coast; roads on the B2 are sealed and straightforward. Fuel and rental costs add up over long distances-book vehicles with roadside assistance if planning remote detours.
- Taxi / private transfer (N$400-1500) - Private taxis and airport transfers are available from Walvis Bay or Windhoek; these are the quickest door-to-door options but cost significantly more than coaches. Agree fares up front and confirm whether rates include waiting time.
- Local minibuses (N$10-50) - Local minibus taxis operate between small towns and villages around Usakos for short hops; they are informal, cheap and frequent but can be crowded and run on demand rather than fixed timetables.
