Montevideo & Río de la Plata Coast
As summer eases, late-autumn heat lingers into March with warm, humid days and fewer tourists than January. The waterfront still has beachgoers early in the month, but evenings begin to cool; it’s a great time for winery day trips to Canelones and for sampling the tail end of beach life. Expect fewer ferry disruptions to Buenos Aires than in midwinter, though occasional southerly squalls can roughen the Río de la Plata.
Punta del Este & Maldonado Coast
As the season winds down, March brings warm days and cooler nights, perfect for long walks along Playa Mansa and art-gallery hopping in Maldonado. Maritime conditions are calmer than in summer and the crowds thin, making it an excellent month for photography and visiting nearby wineries in Garzón. Pack light layers for evenings and expect businesses to start shortening seasonal hours toward month’s end.
Rocha Coast, Nature Reserves & Cabo Polonio
March brings cooling nights and fewer crowds on the shoreline, a pleasant time for walking the dunes between Punta del Diablo and La Paloma. Tides are interesting for shell collecting and shorebird observation, and small cafés stay open with friendly service. Pack a windbreaker for dawn and dusk, as temperatures drop noticeably compared to high summer.
Southwest: Colonia, Carmelo & Río de la Plata Estuary
March brings warm afternoons and cooling nights, making Colonia’s old quarter particularly enjoyable for walking after the daytime heat wanes. The vendimia (grape harvest) period across Uruguay peaks in March, so Carmelo and nearby wineries buzz with activity - a great time for tastings and harvest events. Rain showers can punctuate the month, so a light umbrella is useful between tastings.
Interior Plains & Northwest (Salto, Paysandú, Tacuarembó)
As the land cools in March, daytime temperatures become very pleasant and the harvest season is in view for regional crops; agricultural fairs and local markets are active. The Fiesta de la Patria Gaucha in Tacuarembó (early March) draws big crowds for rodeo, folklore and gaucho competitions - a unique cultural immersion but expect full hotels and road congestion. Packing a light jacket for cool evenings is advisable.
