Historical Site Remote Caucasus region with medieval tower houses

Upper Svaneti is a mountainous cultural region in northwestern Georgia, distinguished by medieval stone defensive towers and a network of highland villages. It is noted for its concentration of traditional Svan architecture and mountain landscapes.
Local highlights include the high‑altitude village of Ushguli, set around 2,100-2,200 metres and preserving multiple tower complexes, and Mestia, the regional centre where museums and trailheads offer interpretation and access to the range of cultural monuments. Activities focus on hiking, cultural visits and viewing medieval masonry.
The region’s defensive towers and stone houses were largely built and developed during the medieval period as family and community fortifications, with many surviving examples from between the early and high Middle Ages through later centuries. Upper Svaneti’s settlements retained traditional patterns of life and material culture that have survived into the modern era.
Upper Svaneti sits on the southern slopes of the Greater Caucasus in northwestern Georgia, occupying high valleys and mountain passes above the Enguri and other river systems.
