The Oval is a historic cricket ground in Kennington, south London, established for cricket in 1845 and long the home of Surrey County Cricket Club. It is one of England’s principal international venues and has hosted Test matches and major domestic fixtures for well over a century.
The ground is known for its traditional Pavilion, the playing arena and a capacity of around 25,000 spectators. It has hosted landmark matches including the first Test match played in England and fixtures associated with the early history of the Ashes.
The site was laid out for cricket in the mid 19th century and became the regular home ground for Surrey County Cricket Club shortly afterwards, evolving over time with new stands and facilities to accommodate modern spectatorship. The Oval has retained key historic features while adding contemporary media and hospitality infrastructure.
