St Davids City
Small cathedral city in Wales
A tiny city built around its cathedral, St Davids lures pilgrims and walkers for stone-lined streets, a medieval cathedral complex and coastal footpaths in Pembrokeshire — cliffs, quiet pubs and seabird-watching reward the longer walk in.
Why Visit St Davids?#
Britain’s smallest city draws travelers with St Davids Cathedral and a centuries-old pilgrimage tradition set against Pembrokeshire Coast National Park. Waves and wide sands at Whitesands Bay attract surfers and beachgoers, and dramatic cliff walks offer close-up views of seabirds and sculpted cliffs. How to Get to St Davids#
St Davids is Britain’s smallest city, located in remote northwest Pembrokeshire. There are no nearby commercial airports on the island; most visitors arrive via Cardiff (CWL) or by train to Haverfordwest and then a local bus or taxi for the final leg to St Davids.
Cardiff Airport (CWL): Cardiff is the closest major commercial airport to St Davids (about 130-150 km / 2-2.5 hours by road). From Cardiff Airport you can take a taxi or transfer into Cardiff city, then rail/bus services west toward Pembrokeshire and Haverfordwest; taxi transfers direct to St Davids are available but expensive.
Haverfordwest / Pembroke Dock (local options): There are no major scheduled commercial flights directly into St Davids; the nearest small airfields serve private and charter flights only. Most visitors use Cardiff Airport or land at larger airports (Bristol, Exeter) and continue by road or rail/bus.
Train: The closest mainline railway station to St Davids is Haverfordwest (served by Transport for Wales), with connections from Cardiff and Swansea. From Haverfordwest you need a bus or taxi for the last 30-40 minutes to St Davids.
Bus: From Haverfordwest there are local bus services (Stagecoach and local operators) to St Davids; the 404/465 routes link Milford Haven/Haverfordwest with St Davids and take roughly 30-40 minutes. Buses are infrequent on Sundays and outside peak season-check timetables ahead of travel.
How to Get Around St Davids#
Because St Davids is remote, most visitors combine rail to Haverfordwest with a local bus or taxi, or drive straight in by rental car. Inside the city and on coastal trails, walking is the best way to experience the sights.
- Train (Transport for Wales) (£10-£25) - Trains to Haverfordwest run from Swansea and Cardiff; services are comfortable but not high frequency. From Haverfordwest you’ll need a bus or taxi to reach St Davids-plan connections carefully, especially off‑peak and on Sundays.
- Bus (Stagecoach/local) (£2-£8) - Local buses connect Haverfordwest, Fishguard and Milford Haven with St Davids. Routes can be slow (rural roads) and timetables sparse outside summer-carry a printed timetable and expect to wait longer on Sundays and evenings.
- Taxi (£25-£60) - Taxis provide reliable transfers from Haverfordwest station or nearby airports. They are the fastest and most direct option for groups or if you have a lot of luggage; book in advance during peak season.
- Car rental (£30-£80/day) - Renting a car is the most flexible way to explore Pembrokeshire and reach St Davids; roads are rural but well signed and parking in St Davids is limited in summer. A car lets you visit beaches and outlying coastal paths easily.
- Local cycle (£10-£25/day) - There are cycle routes in the area and bike hire in nearby towns; coastal lanes and National Trust paths are popular. Some climbs and narrow lanes make e‑bikes or a reasonable fitness level helpful.
- Walking - St Davids itself is compact-cathedral, shops and nearby coastal walks are all walkable. To explore the coast path and beaches, expect uneven ground and some steep sections; wear sturdy footwear.
