Soay Island

Soay is a small Scottish island in the Inner Hebrides, situated near the west coast of the Isle of Skye. It is a rocky, sparsely populated island with a history of small-scale crofting and maritime use.

The island’s landscape comprises steep rocky shores, small sheltered bays and grazing ground that has supported limited human habitation and grazing in the past. Modern visitors reach the island by private or chartered boat and should plan for minimal facilities.

Historically the island supported small communities and subsistence activities; over time permanent population has declined and the island is now quiet outside occasional visits. Land use has focused on grazing and seasonal occupancy rather than permanent large-scale habitation.

Book a local boat charter from Elgol in advance - the crossing to Soay is brief and disembarkation is from a shore landing.
