Union Square is a central public plaza and commercial district in downtown San Francisco, known as a focal point for shopping, hotels and cultural activity since the 19th century.

The site was established during San Francisco’s rapid 19th-century growth and took the name Union Square in the 1860s following pro-Union gatherings during the American Civil War. It evolved into a retail and hotel district through the 20th century and remains a major commercial center.

Union Square sits in the heart of San Francisco’s downtown, a short walk north of Market Street and adjacent to major streets including Powell and Geary; its central position places it within walking distance of many downtown transit connections.
