Unguja
Island Main island of Zanzibar with beaches and Stone Town
Unguja, Zanzibar’s main island, mixes Stone Town’s Omani‑era architecture with spice farms, mangrove estuaries and Indian Ocean beaches. Visitors combine heritage walks in Stone Town with dhow trips, seafood markets and coastal swimming or snorkeling.
Unguja is the principal island of the Zanzibar archipelago (commonly called Zanzibar Island) and contains the territory’s main city and tourist zones. It blends coastal beaches, spice plantations and a historic urban core famous for its Swahili architecture.
The island’s most visited area is Stone Town, the old trading port and historic centre with winding streets, carved doors and mosques; Stone Town is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Outside the town, beaches, marine parks and resort areas along the west and north coasts are major tourism draws.
Unguja has long-standing cultural and trading links to the Swahili coast, the Arabian Peninsula and Indian Ocean commerce; the island developed as a regional trading and cultural centre over centuries.
Unguja lies off Tanzania’s mainland in the Indian Ocean; the main ferry and airport connections link the island to Dar es Salaam and other regional hubs.
