The Uluguru Mountains are a mountain range in eastern Tanzania, in Morogoro Region, and are part of the Eastern Arc chain of uplands. The range rises to peaks above 2,600 metres and is known for exceptionally high biodiversity and many endemic species.

Trails and small-scale community-run reserves allow access to montane forest, waterfalls and viewpoints overlooking the surrounding plains and the city of Morogoro; visiting typically involves guided hikes that can ascend to ridge viewpoints. The area supports smallholder agriculture on the lower slopes and conservation initiatives focused on protecting native forest and water catchments.

The Ulugurus are ancient mountains formed as part of the long-lived Eastern Arc system and have supported long-term forest ecosystems that predate recent climatic cycles. Over the past century local communities have cultivated slopes and conservation groups have worked to protect remnant forest patches and endemic species.

The range lies immediately east of the city of Morogoro in eastern Tanzania, rising steeply from the surrounding lowlands and forming a prominent landscape feature visible from the regional plains.

  • Elevation and biodiversity: Part of the Eastern Arc Mountains with peaks reaching over 2,600 metres and hosting high levels of endemic flora and fauna.

How to Get to Uluguru Mountains #

The Uluguru Mountains rise immediately east of Morogoro town in Tanzania. The usual approach is to travel to Morogoro (the regional hub) by road from Dar es Salaam (roughly 200 km by highway), then use local roads, taxis or minibuses (dala‑dala) from Morogoro to reach trailheads and villages at the Uluguru foothills.

Trail access is from several villages on the mountain slopes; once in Morogoro you can hire guides and arrange short local drives to the specific trailheads.

Tips for Visiting Uluguru Mountains #

  • Base yourself in Morogoro town and start hikes early in the morning to avoid the common afternoon thunderstorms that develop in the Uluguru Mountains.
  • Hire a local licensed guide at the reserve office or through a recognized lodge in Morogoro-guides know the best routes, cultural sites in the villages, and how to navigate the forested trails safely.
  • Plan visits in the region's drier months (roughly June-September and short rains gaps) to get clearer views and firmer trails; wet-season paths can become muddy and slow progress.
