Uludağ
Mountain Turkish mountain near Bursa popular for skiing
A short drive from Bursa, Uludağ draws skiers and hikers to pine forests, groomed slopes, and a national park; cable-car links make it a popular winter-sports base and a summer escape for mountain trails and alpine air.
Uludağ is a prominent mountain massif in Bursa Province, Turkey, rising to about 2,543 metres and forming the highest peak in the immediate Marmara region. It is a nationally designated park and one of Turkey’s best-known mountain resorts.
The destination is important for winter sports and alpine tourism - the upper slopes host a developed ski area with multiple pistes and lift infrastructure. In summer the same slopes are used for hiking, picnic areas and mountain recreation on marked trails through conifer forests.
Known in antiquity as a local Olympus, the area has long been noted in regional geography and acquired formal protection as Uludağ National Park in 1961. Over the 20th century the mountain developed ski facilities and visitor services tied to nearby Bursa.
Uludağ rises directly above the city of Bursa, roughly 30 kilometres from the city centre, and dominates the local skyline. The massif sits within northwestern Turkey’s Marmara Region and forms a distinct alpine island above surrounding lowland plains.
- Elevation: The mountain's summit reaches approximately 2,543 metres above sea level.
- Protection and use: Designated a national park in 1961, the area combines alpine terrain with developed winter sports infrastructure close to Bursa.

How to Get to Uludağ #
From Bursa city centre you can reach Uludağ either by the Bursa Teleferik (cable car) that runs from the Çekirge/Teferrüç area up to the ski resort, or by road. Local buses and taxis serve the cable-car lower station from central Bursa (the ride from the city centre to the lower station typically takes 30-45 minutes).
By car, follow the signed road from Bursa up to Uludağ (the mountain road to the resort); expect roughly a one‑hour drive from Bursa city centre depending on traffic and road conditions. Once at the upper cable‑car station or resort parking areas, hotels and pistes are a short walk.
Tips for Visiting Uludağ #
- Take the Bursa Teleferik (cable car) from the city (Çekirge/Teferrüz station) early on weekday mornings to avoid long weekend queues and heavy road traffic up the slopes.
- If you plan to ski or hike higher up the massif, start from the Sarıalan/Uludağ Plateau area rather than attempting to cut across from secondary roads - Sarıalan gives quicker access to main trails and resort facilities.
- Most visitors miss the panoramic viewpoints along the short ridge walks near the ski resort; allocate time for a short walk at sunset for broad views over Bursa and the Marmara plain.
- Check local resort schedules before you go - lift and piste operations, as well as winter sporting events, change seasonally and can cause localized crowds and road closures.
