Cumalıkızık is a well-preserved Ottoman-era village in Bursa Province, Turkey, noted for its historic rural architecture and village layout. It is part of a UNESCO World Heritage designation recognising early Ottoman urban and rural settlements.

The village presents narrow, irregular lanes lined with traditional timber-framed and stone houses that form a compact historic core. Tourists commonly walk the lanes to view courtyard layouts, wooden façades and local crafts; small guesthouses and shops occupy some restored buildings.

Founded during the early Ottoman expansion, the village retained a rural settlement pattern and many vernacular buildings from later centuries. Its conservation and UNESCO recognition reflect its importance as an example of early Ottoman domestic and village architecture.

Cumalıkızık sits on the eastern approaches to the city of Bursa in northwestern Turkey, approximately 10-15 km from central Bursa, at the foot of the Uludağ foothills.

What to See#

• Historic houses: A compact historic village with narrow cobbled lanes and a cluster of timber-framed and stone houses dating from the Ottoman period, many preserved as private residences or guest accommodations.
• Village mosque and core: A small village mosque and communal spaces that form the village’s original social and religious centre, dating to the Ottoman era and still visible in the conserved layout.

Cumalıkızık is about 20-25 km east of Bursa city centre. From Bursa’s Çekirge or Şehirlerarası Otobüs Terminali, take a local bus or dolmuş towards Yıldırım or directly to Cumalıkızık (routes vary by season); taxis from central Bursa take about 30-40 minutes. Driving: follow the D200/E90 east out of Bursa then local signs to Cumalıkızık village.

• Enter via the main gate by the road from Bursa (the central square is easiest to find) to avoid climbing steep laneways.
• Visit early morning on weekends to see bread ovens and the baker at work - a local ritual that still happens.
• Don't miss the small ethnographic museum and a few preserved Ottoman houses with painted wooden interiors - they are easy to miss amid the cobbles.
