Ukrainian Carpathians
Mountains Mountain range with forests and traditional Hutsul culture
The Ukrainian Carpathians offer highland meadows, conifer forests and mountain passes. Visitors hike, ski in winter, visit Hutsul villages and explore wooden churches and regional markets across western Ukraine.
The Ukrainian Carpathians are the portion of the Carpathian mountain system that lies within western Ukraine, containing the country’s highest peaks and extensive forested highlands. The area is a major center for mountain biodiversity, pastoral landscapes, and traditional mountain cultures.
Hiking, skiing, and rural tourism are the main visitor activities, with marked trails through alpine meadows and forested slopes. The Chornohora range contains the highest summits, and Mount Hoverla reaches 2,061 metres.
Historically the region has been a frontier zone and home to distinct mountain communities such as the Hutsuls, with a long tradition of shepherding, woodworking, and folk festivals. Conservation efforts protect large tracts of forest, alpine habitats, and endemic species.
Geographically the Ukrainian Carpathians run along Ukraine’s western edge and form part of the larger Carpathian arc that continues into Poland, Slovakia, Romania, and beyond.
- Protected areas: The region includes several protected areas and biosphere reserves established to conserve mountain ecosystems and cultural landscapes.
- Cultural note: The Carpathian highlands are a cultural region inhabited by Hutsul and other mountain communities with distinct traditional crafts and festivals.
