Ukerewe Island is the largest island in Lake Victoria that belongs to Tanzania and forms Ukerewe District. It is a significant inhabited island with rural settlements, agriculture and fishing as primary livelihoods.

The island offers a mix of small towns, villages and rural lakeshore landscapes; visitors typically travel to the main town of Nansio, where ferry and boat services connect to the Tanzanian mainland. Local markets, lakeside scenery and boat trips are common visitor activities.

Ukerewe has long been settled with communities engaged in fishing and farming that exploit the lake and fertile soils; its importance is regional rather than national and it functions as the administrative centre for the surrounding district.

Located in the northern part of Lake Victoria, the island lies off the Tanzanian mainland and is served by ferry routes that connect it to the city of Mwanza and other lakeshore settlements.

  • Ferry access and transport: Accessible by scheduled ferry services from Mwanza and other Lake Victoria ports, making maritime transport the main route for visitors and goods.

What to See #

  • Nansio (main town and ferry port): Nansio is the island's administrative and commercial centre, with ferry connections to the mainland and local markets serving residents and visitors.

Tips for Visiting Ukerewe Island #
