Ueno Park

Ueno Park is a large public park in central Tokyo, Japan, created in the 19th century on former temple grounds and today home to several national museums, a zoo, and large green spaces. It is a major cultural and recreational destination in Tokyo.

The park contains multiple museums, including the Tokyo National Museum and the National Museum of Nature and Science, the historic Ueno Zoo, and cultural institutions such as the National Museum of Western Art. Walkways, a notable pond and plentiful cherry trees make it a year-round urban green space with particularly heavy visitation during blossom season.

The park was laid out in the early Meiji period on land belonging to a major temple and was opened as a public space in the 1870s, after which museums and the zoo were established in the following decades. Its development reflects Tokyo’s modernization and cultural institution building in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Located in Taito ward in central Tokyo, the park sits immediately north of Ueno Station and is within easy reach of other central districts such as Akihabara and Asakusa.
