Udzungwa Mountains National Park protects a portion of the Udzungwa Mountains in Tanzania’s Iringa Region and conserves montane and lowland rainforest habitats. The park is recognized for its high biodiversity and concentration of endemic species.

Hikers use a network of trails that lead to rainforest canopies, viewpoints on the Mwanihana massif, and waterfalls such as Sanje Falls. The park supports guided treks of varying length and offers opportunities to see rare primates and other endemic mammals and amphibians.

The area was set aside to protect the unique flora and fauna of the Eastern Arc Mountains and has been managed as a national park to restrict logging and hunting. Research and conservation programs operate in the park to monitor species and forest health.

The park lies in southern central Tanzania within the Udzungwa range, part of the Eastern Arc chain that runs inland from the Indian Ocean, and is accessed from regional towns in Iringa Region.

  • Endemic wildlife: Home to a number of endemic species, including the Sanje mangabey, which is restricted to forests of the Udzungwa massif.
  • Conservation importance: Protected as part of Tanzania's network of national parks that conserve sections of the Eastern Arc Mountains' biodiversity and forest remnants.

What to See #

  • Mwanihana area: The Mwanihana massif offers the park's most frequented trails and viewpoints, with montane forest reaching into higher elevations and well-marked paths used by guided hikes.
  • Sanje Falls: Sanje Falls is one of the park's best-known waterfalls, reachable by trail from local villages and popular with day-hikers who combine it with wildlife viewing.
