Main image

Tyrifjorden is a large freshwater lake in southeastern Norway’s Buskerud area, forming a notable inland water body west of the Oslo region. It is an important regional feature for recreation and local transport corridors.

Calm bays, islands and shoreline areas attract boating, fishing and lakeside leisure activity during the warmer months. Several smaller arms and fjord-like inlets extend from the main body of water and provide sheltered waters for local communities.

The lake has long supported local settlements and transport links in the surrounding districts; communities on its shores developed around fishing, timber and later recreational use. Infrastructure and towns at the lake’s edges grew with regional economic development.

Located in Buskerud (part of the Viken area) west of the Oslofjord region, Tyrifjorden is surrounded by agricultural land, forests and small towns, with transport connections to larger nearby population centers.

  • Recreation and shoreline use: Serves as a regional recreation area for boating, fishing and lakeside cabins, with several small arms and bays that extend into the surrounding landscape.

What to See #

  • Steinsfjorden: An arm of the lake known for shoreline recreation and shallow waters used by local boating and angling communities.

How to Get to Tyrifjorden #

Tyrifjorden is a large lake in Buskerud province west-northwest of Oslo. Depending on which shore you aim for it is roughly 40-50 km from central Oslo by road. The easiest way by car is to take E16 toward Hønefoss and then local county roads to towns on the lake; Hønefoss lies at the north end of Tyrifjorden. Regional buses and trains serve towns around the lake-check local timetables for the closest stop and any short walks to the shoreline.

Tips for Visiting Tyrifjorden #

  • Visit on clear mornings (especially in summer) for the best visibility across the basin; afternoon haze and local wind can reduce views across the lake.
  • Explore quieter shoreline roads and small towns around the lake (rather than only major towns like Hønefoss) to find secluded beaches and viewpoints that many day-trippers miss.
  • If you want fewer people at popular outlooks, go on weekday mornings outside school holiday periods when regional day-trippers are least active.
