Utøya is an island in Tyrifjorden in the Buskerud area of Norway, known internationally as the site of the mass shooting on 22 July 2011 during a youth summer camp. The event is a defining element of the island’s recent history.

The island’s terrain is wooded and relatively small in scale, with open lawned areas that were used for camp activities. Memorials and commemorative spaces have been established to remember the victims and reflect on the 2011 attack.

The island had been used for political youth camps and recreational activities prior to the attack, and the 2011 events led to national reflection, legal processes and long-term memorial planning. Access to parts of the site is managed in connection with commemorative activities.

Utøya sits in Tyrifjorden and is reached by boat from the nearest mainland landing; it lies within the lake landscape northwest of Oslo and is part of the region’s inland waterways.

Public transport from Oslo includes regional buses to the ferry landing; check timetables and island access rules before travel.
