Tyre
Historical Site Ancient Phoenician port city with coastal archaeological ruins
An ancient Phoenician port in southern Lebanon with extensive Roman ruins - including a seaside hippodrome - a fishing harbour and long sandy beaches. Tourists visit archaeology sites, beach resorts and local fish markets.
Tyre is an ancient port city on Lebanon’s southern coast famous for its long history as a Phoenician and later Roman settlement. The site includes substantial archaeological ruins adjacent to modern urban areas and is a focal point for coastal tourism in southern Lebanon.
Visitors typically see the colonnaded streets, the海-shore ruins and the well-preserved Roman hippodrome, as well as beaches and the city’s historic core. The juxtaposition of standing Roman structures with a living modern town makes Tyre a combined archaeological and seaside destination.
Tyre has been occupied since antiquity as a major Phoenician city and later became part of the Hellenistic and Roman worlds; its harbour and urban fabric evolved through Byzantine, Islamic and Ottoman periods. Archaeological investigations over the 19th and 20th centuries have exposed the Roman urban plan and public buildings.
The city lies on the Mediterranean coast of southern Lebanon, south of Sidon and well south of Beirut, and is reachable by coastal roads; the archaeological zones are concentrated around the old town and shoreline.
- Shoreline ruins: Archaeological remains extend into the sea in places; shoreline exposure varies with tides and preservation.
What to See #
- Al-Bass / Archaeological Park: An extensive archaeological ensemble on both the mainland and the old island, featuring a colonnaded Roman street, a large Roman necropolis and other Roman and Byzantine remains.
- Roman Hippodrome: A large Roman-era hippodrome located close to the coastal ruins and partially preserved in its original position near the shore.
- Old Town and Shoreline: The modern Old Town with a coastal promenade, traditional souks and neighbourhoods built around and alongside the archaeological remains.
How to Get to Tyre #
Tyre (Sour) lies on Lebanon’s southern coast and is reached by road from Beirut via the coastal highway; the drive is roughly 75-90 km south and typically takes about 1.5-2 hours depending on traffic. Intercity coaches and shared minibuses run from Beirut and Sidon to Tyre and stop at the town’s main bus area.
The archaeological site and beachfront are within easy walking distance of Tyre’s city center and main bus stops; once in town most visitors reach the main ruins and promenade on foot in a few minutes.
Tips for Visiting Tyre #
- Visit the archaeological site (Al‑Bass/Hippodrome area) early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid midday heat and the largest tour groups; the site is compact so you can see key ruins in 1-2 hours.
- Enter the excavations from the Al‑Bass side near the Roman hippodrome (the main visitor area) - it's the easiest access point and closest parking for the principal ruins.
- Don't skip the modern town's fishing harbour and old souks along the corniche - they offer a different perspective of Tyre's living heritage that many archaeological visitors miss.
Best Time to Visit Tyre #
