Tynemouth Priory and Castle are the ruins of a medieval monastery and fortress on a headland at the mouth of the River Tyne in North East England, with origins dating to the early medieval period.
A monastery was established on the headland in the early medieval period and the site became a prominent religious center; the priory was later reconstituted under Norman and medieval monastic orders and the adjacent castle was strengthened and used for coastal defence. The religious house was suppressed in the 16th century and the site continued to be used and modified for military purposes into the 19th century.
